Dunedin Hospital provides a full range of medical and surgical abortion services in-person or by phone.
Free call 0800 TOPSDHB (0800 867 7342) or 027 364 1468 to speak to a clinic nurse.
Dunedin Hospital provides abortion services for the Otago region, including telehealth (phone consultations), and also provides a service for Southland residents who are over 15 weeks of pregnancy.
What will it cost?
Cost for New Zealand citizen/resident*
Free abortion services for any pregnant person eligible for publicly funded healthcare in New Zealand living in the Te Whatu Ora Southern district. There may be prescription fees and costs for ultrasound.
Cost for non-New Zealand resident

Accessibility
There is level access to the main entrance of Dunedin Public Hospital and then lift access to the Day Surgery Unit.
If you have accessibility needs, please let the clinic know ahead of your appointment.
Mobility parking is limited outside the main entrance to the hospital (Great King Street) due to construction work. Public parking is available at 89 Frederick Street Parking, about three minutes walk from the main entrance.
The nearest public transport stop is Great King Street.
Translation services
Translation services are available. Please let the clinic know that you will need translation support.
Female practitioner
A female practitioner is available at the clinic.
Contraception
Contraception available through this clinic.
- Contraception prescriptions.
- IUD or IUS devices can be inserted when you have a surgical abortion.
- A free contraceptive service is available after you have had your abortion.
- A Depo Provera injection can be given at the same time as the first medication if you are having an early medical abortion.
- An implant can be inserted at the same time as the first medication if you are having an early medical abortion.
Counselling
Abortion decision counselling, and pre and post-abortion counselling are available both in-person and virtually.
