What do I need to do to have an abortion here?

You can self-refer to this service if you're a Southland resident.

If you're a Southland resident and require an abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy, you'll be referred from The Women's Clinic, Invercargill to Dunedin Hospital, or you can contact Dunedin Hospital directly.

What will it cost?*

Cost for New Zealand citizen/resident

Abortion services are free for any pregnant person eligible for publicly funded healthcare in New Zealand living in the Te Whatu Ora Southern district. There may be prescription fees and costs for ultrasound.

Cost for non-New Zealand resident

  • Early medical abortion from NZ$1,150
  • Early surgical abortion from NZ$1,500

There may be prescription fees, and additional costs for bloods and/or ultrasound.

    Accessibility

    The clinic is on the ground floor and there is a ramp at the front door. Ring the doorbell when you arrive.

    The clinic has a wheelchair accessible toilet.

    If you have accessibility needs, please let the clinic know ahead of your appointment.

    Mobility parking and public parking are available outside the clinic.

    Translation services

    If English is not your first language and your need a translator, please let us know. We can arrange for translation services.

    There are female practitioners at this clinic.

    Contraception

    Free contraception is available to you after you have had an abortion if you are eligible for publicly funded healthcare in New Zealand. The contraception available through this clinic is:

    • Oral contraception prescriptions
    • IUDs
    • Depo Provera injection (the Jab)
    • Jadelle insertion (the rods)

    If you're having an early medical abortion and want to opt for one of our long-acting contraception options, these can be inserted or administered at the same time as you take the first medication.

    If you're having a surgical abortion, then your contraception of choice can be implemented or administered following the abortion procedure.

    Counselling

    Abortion decision counselling, pre-abortion and post-abortion counselling are available in person or virtually.
