The Gynaecology Unit at Timaru Hospital provides abortions for the Te Whatu Ora South Canterbury district. If you require a later surgical abortion (over 14 weeks of pregnancy), you will be referred from the Gynaecology Unit at Timaru Hospital to the Gynaecology Procedure Unit (GPU) at Christchurch Women's Hospital, or you can contact GPU directly.
What will it cost?*
Cost for New Zealand citizen/resident
Free abortion services to any pregnant person eligible for publicly funded healthcare in New Zealand who lives in the Te Whatu Ora South Canterbury district. There may be prescription fees and costs for ultrasound.
Cost for non-New Zealand resident
Abortion service not offered to non-New Zealand residents.

Accessibility
There is ramp access to the main entrance of Timaru Hospital and lift access to the clinic, which is located on Level 2.
The clinic has a wheelchair accessible toilet.
If you have accessibility needs, please let the clinic know ahead of your appointment.
Mobility parking is available outside the main entrance to the hospital. Public parking is available on Queen Street, or one block away.
The nearest public transport stops on Queen Street.
Translation services
Translation services are available. Please let the clinic know that you will need translation support.
Female practitioner
A female practitioner is available at the clinic.
Contraception
Contraception available through this clinic.
- Contraception prescriptions.
- IUD or IUS devices can be inserted when you have a surgical abortion.
- A free contraceptive service is available after you have had your abortion.
- A Depo Provera injection can be given at the same time as the first medication if you are having an early medical abortion.
- An implant can be inserted at the same time as the first medication if you are having an early medical abortion.
Counselling
Abortion decision counselling, and pre and post-abortion counselling is required and is available both in-person and virtually.
